Christmas 2012 Trip to North Carolina

The vineyards at Westbend

Christmas 2012 brought a quick excursion down to Winston Salem, North Carolina to visit our daughter and soon to be son-in-law. We had hoped it would bring some warmer weather as well, since we were expecting snow in Rhode Island. That really didn’t happen though, as it was cold and rainy for most of the

Review of Trip to Winston Salem Coming This Weekend

We hit the airport for a flight to North Carolina and a Christmas visit with our daughter and soon to be son-in-law this past week. There was a lot of eating and drinking and a visit to two North Carolina wineries. If you’re not familiar with the North Carolina wine industry it is large, with

2009 Justin Isosceles Revisited

CIMG1373

Back in September we attended the Newport Mansions Food and Wine Festival with some friends. On that day we all agreed that the wine of the event was the 2009 Justin Isosceles. It was a luxurious, mouth coating effort with vibrant fruits and a very long finish. We even went back and had a second

A Great Port

CIMG1370

We recently had some friends over after a restaurant trip and opened a great bottle of port for a nightcap. Here it is:

The 1977 Messias Vintage Port. 1977 was a great year. I’ve had several vintage ports and Colheitas (single year ports) from 1977, and they have all been excellent. This may be the

The Invasion of French Wine Country

Throughout history the French have fought wars and dealt with invaders. Romans, Germans, Austrians, British and Spaniards have taken a shot at them. The Romans of course did more than take a shot and stayed for a few hundred years. Now a new invasion is underway, fought without swords or guns and far more insidious;

Weekend Wines Dec 7-9, 2012

This weekend we popped one wine we know well and one we don’t. Here are the tasting notes:

Wine: Finca Flichman Paisage de Barrancas Winery Location: Argentina

Tasted By: Neil Date: Dec 7, 2012

Tasting Notes: This is a blend of Syrah, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. Unfortunately this bottle had a very slight corkiness to

Most Expensive Wines

I’ve mentioned in a few posts how some wines get crazy expensive. The wine just named Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator jumped from $60 into the hundreds overnight. Petrus in Bordeaux (Pomerol) goes for over $2000. The great first growths, Latour, Margaux, Lafite, Mouton and Haut Brion bring over $1000 in big vintages.

Spectator Top Wine – Going, going, $$$$$

Just a follow up on the Wine Spectator Top 100 issue. As wrote in the last post, the number one wine is tough to get and frequently goes up drastically in price. You generally are never going to be able to buy it for what they list as the release price.

So I spent a

Review of Wine Spectator Top 100

This is the time of year that the Wine Spectator puts out their best of the year issue. Prior to the magazine release they tease them out by issuing a few at a time, day by day. In earlier days I used to really look forward to the list, as I expected it to be

006 Chateau Fongaban and 2010 Bogle Petite Syrah

This weekend we opened two wines that were both good and reasonably priced. One was a 2006 Bordeaux and the other a 2010 California Petite Syrah.

We love Bordeaux and drink it a lot. We also love Petite Syrah but don’t drink it a lot. There could be several reasons for this. It is not
