A Decent, Lower Priced Barbaresco

We have always loved Nebbiolo, ever more so since we traveled a bit through Piemonte last year and visited both Barbaresco and Barolo.  There’s a reason Barolo has been called the King of Wines.  Nebbiolo can be so great, however that generally comes at a price.  Finding an excellent Nebbiolo at a reasonable cost is difficult.  This wine is good and inexpensive, however it is not going to rival a top Barolo or Barbaresco.  You wouldn’t expect it to for under $20.

cantina barbarescoWine:    2011 Cantina del Nebbiolo Barbaresco

Winery Location:  Roero, not far from Barbaresco

Tasted By:   Neil & Cheri            Date:    December 2015

Tasting Notes:  – Red in color towards the garnet, the wine has aromas of red fruits with tart cherry, oak and spice.  The floral elements of Nebbiolo are suppressed here.  The tannins are not aggressive, but the wine still has noticeable acidity and an edge to it.  It seems like it will improve with more time.

Price Point –    under $20.  Maybe closer to $15 based on wine searcher.

Would We Buy It?    under $20 we would and we have.  It’s not Gaja, but it is pretty good Barbaresco at a very reasonable price.

A votre santé!
