A Good New England Red

We opened our last bottle of the 2008 Chamard Vineyards Merlot this weekend.  This is a really good bottle of red wine from somewhere north of Long Island.  It’s really not very far north of Long Island, being in Clinton near the southern coast of Connecticut, but it is a true New England winery, and the wine is good.  It opened Saturday night with good red fruit (some cherry?) medium body,  a bit of acidity and very integrated tannins.  On Sunday it was better (it spent the night after being vacuvin stoppered) with some smokey, pork fat flavors according to Cheri.  I tend to agree.

We’re going to take a drive down to Chamard and buy some more if they still have the 2008.  If not we’ll have to try what they do have.

We still owe a write up on the 2012 Newport Mansions Food and WIne Festival.  That was fun as always.  It seemed like they had a better range of producers represented, with Anderson’s Conn Valley, Justin, Pride, Far Niente, Long Meadow Ranch and a host of others.  For both Cheri, myself and two friends we were with (the Koch’s) the wine of the day was the Justin 2009 Isoceles.
