Buy This! – 2017 Indaba Mosaic Red Blend

We don’t often just flat out tell you to buy something.  Wine is such a personal thing, and everyone has a different palate.  This wine, however, defies its price level and packs unbelievable value.  Let’s talk about what is in the bottle first.

This is a Bordeaux style blend.  The 2017 is a mix of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot.  The blend varies year to year, as will the oak treatment.  It could be a combination of treatment with staves or various aged barrels.  The different grapes are likely macerated and fermented independently as well.   Then the whole thing is masterfully blended.  Also, before I forget, the grapes are sourced from different vineyards in one of the best wine making countries on the planet.

This sounds like something you would be buying from the left bank of Bordeaux, and paying north of $50 for.  It actually comes from South Africa.  The wine is the 2017 Indaba Mosaic Red Blend.  It is also under $10, and we actually found one online retailer listing it at $6.95.  You are not going to find another bottle of juice handled with this kind of care for that price.

Here are our tasting notes:

Indaba FrontThe wine is a dark, purple red with a rich nose of blackberry and currant, with complex notes of menthol, vanilla, savory tones and even a touch of blue fruit.  On the palate it is more savory, with the blackberry coming through, along with some toasty oak.  It is full bodied but not an opulent wine.  Good balance is present throughout, and it finishes long.  Give this a little time to open up and it will reward you.

This is one of those wines that you could put in a glass at a blind tasting and blow people away with.  I think everyone would easily be tempted to score it higher if they didn’t know how inexpensive it was.

We bought it.  We’ll buy more of it.  This is an uncommonly good value.

A votre santé!
