Cellar Selection: 2003 Chateau Cantenac Brown

Let’s look at an older Bordeaux just pulled from the cellar to see how things have fared over the past 17 years.  The bottle in question is a 2003 Bordeaux.  The 2003 vintage is considered to be very good, was somewhat fruit forward, and not all of the wines were built for long term aging.  We haven’t opened a bottle of this particular wine in about five years, so this should be interesting.

Cantenac Brown 2003Wine:  2003 Chateau Cantenac Brown

Winery Location:   Margaux,  Left Bank Bordeaux

Tasted By:  Neil & Cheri

Date:  August 2020

Tasting Notes:   As it sits in the glass you would never guess it is 17 years since they made this.  The color is a deep ruby, pretty much all the way to the rims.  The nose is huge and full of dark berries, some bramble and mint.  Long legs cascade down the glass.  On the palate it is full bodied, with berries and cherry.  The tannins are still brisk, and the wine is well balanced with some nice acid.  This is very, very long, and holding up superbly.

Price Point –    about $70 online

Would We Buy It?   maybe not today, as it would cost around $70.  Although it is certainly in that quality range considering it is left bank Bordeaux, and it is really good.

This is another great example of why I love Bordeaux from the better vintages.  They last forever (almost), and just get better.

A votre santé!
