Go To Red Under $20 from Allegrini

Allegrini makes wine in the Veneto region of northeast Italy, more specifically in the western part of the Veneto, in the Valpolicella.  They have been making wine here since the 16th century, and are about as dependable as you can get from a quality and consistency perspective.  This wine is one that fits both those categories perfectly.

palazzoWine:   2015 Allegrini Palazzo della Torre

Winery Location:  Valpolicella, Veneto, Italy

Tasted By:   Neil & Cheri                                  Date:   September 2019

Tasting Notes: this is made with a hybrid approach, where some of the grapes are put through the appassimento method, in which they are dried out on mats and concentrate their flavor as they become raisins.  They are then crushed and the juice is added to the rest of the wine, which has already gone through fermentation.  The combined juice then undergoes a second fermentation.  The result here is a wine with cascading layers of dark fruits.  It is not too jimmy or raisiny, but rather smooth, integrated and long.  It really is pretty exceptional, and could be 2-3 times it’s price.  One of the best vintages of this we have tried over the past decade or two.

Price Point –    $17 – generally under $20 most places.

Would We Buy It?    we did, we do and we will again.  This is a great bottle of wine under $20, and exceptional in some vintages.  2015 is one of those exceptional vintages.

If you want a seamless and red with great depth, and want to stay under $20, then this is a great choice.

A votre santé!
