Quality Wines from Notre Vue in Sonoma

Notre Vue LogoNotre Vue wines was established in Sonoma County, California by owners Bob and Renée Stein, on 710 acres of rolling land which provides a variety of vineyard conditions.  Open space is intermingled with the vineyards, and in fact 350 acres are set aside as open space.  The varying conditions Landscapeallows them to grow multiple European varieties in close proximity.  An example of the differing soils can be seen in the picture to the left.  These are from three different vineyards from the estate, where they grow Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah, all classic grapes of the soilsRhone Valley.  The Mourvedre vineyard soil is more rocky than the Grenache, and the Syrah is redder, suggestive of more clay.  All of the different conditions allows them to have a wide range of wines, which include traditional varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, along with red Bordeaux style blends, Rosés in different styles, and even a brut sparkling wine.  You can learn much more about Notre Vue winery on their website at https://www.notrevueestate.com/.

We have two wines from Notre Vue to review, a Rosé and a Chardonnay.  Here they are:

IMG_0579Wine:   2019 Notre Vue Rosé of GSM

Winery Location:   Windsor, CA – Sonoma Valley

Tasted By:  Neil                        Date: October 2020

Tasting Notes:  this is the white version of a Chateauneuf du Pape, and is a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre.  The wine is a medium, orangey pink in color.  On the nose you get citrus, with lemon and orange components.  There is also Strawberry and spice.  On the palate it is also citrus and strawberry.  This has some nice texture to it.  It is very clean, long and well made.  Superior Rosé.

Price Point –    $29

Would We Buy It?   We’re not the biggest Rosé fans, but this wine is really excellent.  It is fairly priced and worthy of a place among the better Rosés.

And now the Chardonnay:

Winery Location:   Windsor, CA

Tasted By:  Neil                 Date:  October 2020

Tasting Notes:  This is a medium, golden yellow color, with a big nose of ripe fruit, including pear, some tropical and floral notes.  The oak is certainly there but not overpowering.  It is rich on the palate, with great mouthfeel.  You can see the viscosity in this wine as you swirl it.  The ripe fruits lead to a lemon finish, which is long and clean.  Another very high quality wine.

Price Point –   $36

Would We Buy It?  Here we have one of the other wines we generally don’t reach for, an oaked Chardonnay.  But this is very good, with the oak beautifully integrated.  This would stand up to a lot of white Burgundy priced far higher.  If you like some oak in your Chardonnay this is well worth a try.

Clearly Notre Vue, and winemaker Alex Holman, are doing things right.  We can only assume the rest of their line is of the same quality standard.  We look forward to finding out.

A votre santé!
