Rich Red from Argentina, and Domaine Bousquet

logoDomaine Bousquet started their vineyards in Tupungato, Mendoza over 20 years ago.  They came from France, determined to make great wine in the high altitude and challenging conditions of the region.  At 4000 feet, their vineyards are some of the highest in Mendoza, and for that matter, the world.  This area in Argentina has become world renown, producing striking Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, among other varietals.

We’ve reviewed wines from Domaine Bousquet in the past, and their Gaia red and white blends are generally a pretty solid value bottle of wine.  This time we were excited to have a premium wine from Bousquet in house, that being their Ameri red blend.  This is their icon wine, from a single, high altitude vineyard.  Let’s see what’s in the bottle.

Winery Location:   Tupungato, Mendoza – Argentina

Tasted By:  Neil & Cheri              Date: March 2019

Tasting Notes:  this wine is organically farmed, harvested by hand from a single vineyard, and aged for 16 months in French oak.  It is dark purple in the glass, with a big nose of dark berries, herbal notes, and oak.  On the palate the tannins are brisk, and the wine is a bit brawny but still approachable.  A little time in the glass smooths it out a touch, and I would suggest decanting for an hour.  This is full bodied, rich and very long.  A quality wine all around certainly.  A blend of 60% Malbec, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Syrah and 5% Merlot.

Price Point –    Suggested retail of $35.  Might find it for a bit less than that.

Would We Buy It?    Yes we would.  This is a quality, organic red blend with a lot going for it.

Here we have another quality wine from Domaine Bousquet, and one which does indeed reach into the premium ranks.  For somewhere around $30-$35 this is a good choice.
