Tasty Super Tuscan from Petrolo

Petrolo is a storied winery in the Chianti region of Tuscany.  Their property and vineyards in the Val d’Arno di Sopra DOC have a winemaking tradition which goes back hundreds and hundreds of years.  The vineyards border Chianti Classico.

Petrolo makes an amazing 100% Merlot wine called Galatrona.  It is one of my favorite wines in the world, and maybe my absolute favorite.  You’ll spend in the area of $100+ for that bottle, but you can experience some of the greatness of Petrolo for much less.   As proof we review the wine below:

Torrione Low ResWine:   2018 Petrolo Torrione

Winery Location:   Tuscany, Val d’Arno di Sopra

Tasted By:   Neil & Cheri         Date: September 2021

Tasting Notes:  the wine is a dark ruby in color.  The nose is rich, and full of berries including blackberry and currant.  There are floral notes, a touch of tobacco and some spice.  On the palate it is also rich, with medium tannins and lots of fruit throughout.  The balance is wonderful, with fresh acid and an edge to the wine that keeps it fresh.   It finishes very long.  Made from Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with the Sangiovese making up the bulk of the blend.  A such it is a classic Super Tuscan, and a good one.

Price Point –    ~$25-$30

Would We Buy It?   oh yes, this is an excellent bottle of red wine, and well worth the price.  It pushes all the buttons.

A great wine from a great producer, this one goes on our Value List.  If you get the chance try the Galatrona.  If that is not practical, try this wine.

A votre santé!
