Wine in Cans – Convenient Options for Summer

Wine in cans is not unusual anymore, and you can find plenty of options at your local wine store.  In general you should expect something drinkable and relatively inexpensive.  This is not going to be Chateau Latour after all.  That said, there is some very good juice that goes into cans, and you can’t argue with the convenience.  Perfect for picnics or when you just want a quick glass, the wines below are good choices for grab and go options where you might not want big glass bottles hanging around.  The cans contain 250 ml, so it’s really about one and a half normal glasses in each.  The grapes here are all certified organic.

Can - Malbec - May 2022Wine:    Le Petit Verre Malbec

Winery Location:   Mendoza, Argentina

Tasted By:  Neil                      Date:    May 2022

Tasting Notes:  This is a dark purple wine, with a brooding nose of black plum and some oak.  There is berry fruit lurking underneath.  On the palate it is medium+ bodied, with plum and berry fruit as well as some fig.  Tannins are smooth, and there is refreshing acid to keep it balanced.  It finishes quite long.  All in all this is a straight forward Malbec with good fruit and a pleasing finish.  Fruit here is from the 2021 vintage.

Price Point –    $13 for a four pack

Would We Buy It?   we would, especially if we were grabbing some wine to take with us to an outing or sporting event.  This is a very drinkable Malbec at a good price, and in a convenient package.

And now the Rosé:

Can - Rose - May 2022Wine:    Le Petit Verre Bubbly Rosé

Winery Location:   Mendoza, Argentina

Tasted By:  Neil                        Date:   May 2022

Tasting Notes:  This has a touch of effervescence and bubble to it, and a fruity nose with some citrus and strawberry.  There’s also a hint of something savory, which is different but also pleasant at the same time.  It’s also unexpected in most Rosés.  The grapes in the mix here are Pinot Noir, Syrah, Pinot Gris and Viognier, and I think that the Syrah is bringing that tiny bit of savory to the party.  On the palate this is about the fruit.  It is fresh with good acid, and overall a pleasing Rosé.  Fruit is also from the 2021 harvest.

Price Point –    the same – $13 for a four pack.  Expect about $3.50 per can if offered individually.

Would We Buy It?    Yes, for the same reasons cited above under the Malbec.  The wine is good, the package is convenient and the price is right.

If you’re heading out to a game, or the park, and want some red and white wine for the occasion then these are a great option.  To be honest, I had a few cans of the Malbec on the counter, and the Rosé in the fridge, and did enjoy just popping one open whenever I wanted a glass.  They’re not just for outings or events.

A votre santé!
