A Good Value Tuscan Red from Antinori

Marchesi Antinori has been making wine in Tuscany for hundreds of years.  Their product line spans Chianti, Brunello, a range of world renowned Super Tuscans and all sorts of other things.  We’d be hard pressed to remember an Antinori wine we didn’t like.  This one certainly doesn’t fall into that category.

Tasting Notes:     – this is a blend of indigenous and international varieties, typically Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Sangiovese.  The 2010 growing season started with challenges, as bud break was a full 15 days later than usual.  The vines recovered well however, as this wine shows beautifully.  It is ruby red with a nose of currants, cherry, oak and some earthy tones.  The wine is full bodied, with some tart cherry and red fruits.  The acid is well balanced, the tannins are sweet and the wine finishes long and satisfying.  This is quite good, and would be great either by itself or with food.  It saw French, American and Hungarian oak.  We need to try some other vintages to see how it holds up across a few years.  Very nice.

Price Point –   $14 on sale.  About $16 on wine-searcher.

Would We Buy It?  – absolutely, this is an excellent Super Tuscan at a very affordable price.  We always tend to like Antinori wines and this is no exception.  It’s not Tignanello, but it’s also not $100.  We suggest you try this, it’s going on the value list.
